What is the safe distance from mobile phone tower?

We, at Brightsandz do mobile phone tower RF radiation audits. We meet a lot of people who are concerned about mobile phone towers around their homes and work spaces. In this blog, We try answering the question – what is a safe distance from a mobile phone tower.

Spoiler: For a quick answer in metres distance scroll below and read the conclusion.

Introduction

Living near cell phone tower is not healthy. There are multiple health risks associated with living near cell phone tower. Cell phone towers communicate by use of pulsed microwave signals with each other. WHO (World health organization) and IARC (International agency for research on Cancer) declared radio frequency radiation (RFR) to be cancer causing in May 2011. Even while RFR is associated with same level of carcinogenicity as Lead, Sulphur fumes and Vehicle Exhaust, there are many who question this (cancer) premise. So the debate ranges. In the mean time, we advocate use of the precautionary principle. Better safe than worry.

Safe distance from a mobile phone tower – Making sense of the antennas

Not all mobile antennas are the same. There is a difference between a receiving antenna and a transmitting antenna. The most usual way to make out is the difference in space. A receiving antenna is generally circular or elliptical in space. Whereas, a transmitting antenna is cuboid, squarish or rectangular in shape.

The circular antennas are used to receive microwave signals. The rectangular ones are used for transmission,
What is the safe distance from a mobile phone tower: The key is to understand the antennas and their functions

Not all mobile antennas radiate the same frequency. One antenna could be radiating at 800 MHz whereas another could be radiating at 2300MHz or 2.3GHz. As a thumb rule the higher the radiating frequency, the higher will be the radiated energy. Therefore, in terms of radiation – a 800MHz antenna radiates lesser energy as compared to 2.3Ghz antenna.

Natural and artificial barriers to mobile phone tower radiation

RF radiation intensity falls with concrete or even natural barriers (stone, rock, dense foliage). Therefore if the tower is not in direct line of sight, there are chances that the radiation will be low.

In some cases for better connectivity – antennas are tilted around vertical axis. Such a tilt can change the plane of radiation and therefore concentrate high RF radiation in the direction of the tilt.

Number of antennas pointing at the building or living area

RF Radiation directed at you also depends upon the number of antennas that are facing towards you. Generally a higher number of antennas facing you will mean higher degree of radiation incident on you. In India, the department of telecom (DoT) has a distance advisory for number of antenna in the same direction from any building or human housing structure.

safe distance from a mobile phone tower : DoT guidelines for Antenna and tower erection
DOT Guidelines for number of antenna on mobile phone towers in the same direction as a function of distance from buildings and residential or office structures.

Shadow zones near mobile phone towers

A mobile phone antenna has a radiating pattern. It transmits higher energy in the blue shaded lobes. This emission intensity falls with distance. It also falls if you are not directly in any of the radiation lobes. The shadow zone is an area which falls out of the radiation lobe of an antenna. Alternatively, the highest radiation exposure is at the primary lobe at about 50 metres from the radiating antenna.

Coverage area and shadow areas from a mobile radiation perspective
Cell tower radiation intensity is the highest in the primary lobe (Dark green shade portion) – an area at 50 to 300 metre distance at an angular placement of 5 to 10 degree from the plane of radiation.
Any area not in the primary lobe falls in the shadow zone – which does not receive high radiation

Impact of distance on Mobile Phone tower and mobile phone radiation

Radiation from mobile phone tower (Purple Line) reduces exponentially with distance. Within 50 metres, it is higher than the exposure limiting value. This area around a cell phone tower could be dangerous in terms of high radiation from the tower.
However, as we start going further away from the tower, and the tower signal (Purple line) drops, the Phone radiation levels (Red line) start increasing. At around the 150 metre mark, phone radiation levels go beyond the exposure limiting value. For the rest of the distance – phone radiation remains pretty high. This is more damaging because it is closer to the brain side.

What is the safe distance from a mobile phone tower?

Radiation power is typically the strongest at 50 metres distance from the antenna and it keeps falling. After 150 metre, it becomes weak (Refer to diagram below). Post that the cell phone has to do more work to reach out to the radiated signals. Therefore in shadow zones (refer to point) and at longer distances from cell towers, instances of call drops increase.

Perhaps the most critical point here is that when radiation power from mobile tower antennas fall, there is a consequent increase in radiation levels from mobile phones and cell phones. A mobile phone antenna radiates at 80-160 Watt/ sq.m. However it has a high distance of separation. Whereas, a mobile phone radiates at <1 Watt/ sq.m. However it is only a few millimeters away from the head space/ brain cavity. In such a condition, when the phone is radiating at a high, the absorption of radiation by the brain is multiple times higher than that of radiation absorbed from mobile phone tower emission.

To summarize, radiation from a mobile phone tower, is 24*365 slow roast. This can be mitigated by avoiding line of sight or shielding procedures. We have known of instances in Mumbai, Okhla, GKII, Maharani Bagh (New Delhi) where high proximity to cell tower have led to cases of cancer.

Mobile phones and brain tumor risks
For mobile phone use of 10 years or longer, or more than 1640 hours, AIIMS study show 1.33 times increase in risk of brain tumor.

However, the greater risk is the damage from our own mobile phones in places where the mobile network coverage is not strong enough. This has a greater bearing on individual health raising concerns of cluster headaches, deafness, tinnitus and even Brain tumor. All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi has set a limit of less than 45 minutes talk time on the mobile phone when it is placed close to the ear beside the head. The study states a 33% increase in brain tumor rates for heavy cellphone users.

In conclusion

The safe distance from a mobile phone tower is not an objective answer. There are multiple factors that affect mobile radiation intensity. As a thumb rule, anyone in 150 metre radius could be under risk. And if the tower is 300 metres or more distant, this could lead to weak coverage – leading to signal drops. Ironically most of the times, we are more concerned by the mobile phone tower 300 metres away from us and choose to be blissfully ignorant about the mini cell tower that we carry on ourselves through the day – the cellphones.

Hi! I am living in a flat in Kerala, India. The building is 7 storey high and mobile tower is fixed on the top floor. We are so much worried about the radiation related issue. Is there a need to be worried? Please reply.

You will need to tell me which floor is your floor in.
Most probably, you will be in the shadow zone of the radiation from the tower. So you donot need to be worried about cell tower radiation. (Having said so, it is still a prudent idea to get an audit of your home done).
However, please note that in most cases mobile phones radiate more in shadow zones – because they are trying extra hard to reach out to the cell tower signals. So We would suggest you to reduce your mobile phone use at home – use a landline phone, and use a airtube earphone to mitigate cell phone radiation risk.
In most of the times, we are more concerned about radiation from the tower, 25 metres away – but we are not careful of the radiation from the cellphone from close distance.

Should I be concerned for myself and children? We live directly in front of a very tall cell phone tower. The tower is .19 miles behind my house with 1 line of trees in between us. We have lived near this tower for 11 years. I have become more concerned lately because of the 5g that is soon to come. Is my personal phone creating more radiation than the tower that’s soooo close to my home? Should I be concerned about this tower? I have thought about moving because of the potential harm of the radio frequency waves. Please email or respond back with some helpful information. Thank you!

Hello. Isn’t the line of sight downward for cell towers? Does that include 5g? And if so, so does that mean that if I am above all the cell phone towers (like if I’m living at the top of the hill where all the towers are about 25 feet below me and perhaps further out, I’m safer than being eye level to it? I guess I want to know if being above the tower helps in terms of exposure or does it worsen it. Please advise. Thanks.

Hi Jennifer

Thanks for writing in. Have you ever shone a torch light in darkness? The area of light (Umbra and Penumbra) settle as how you are holding the torch. If you hold skywards then it so will it shine. If you hold it to a higher ground, it will illuminate the higher ground. If you shine it to your feet, it will illuminate your feet. What matters it how strong the light is and how far you are from what you are trying to illuminate. Too far and the light will be completely diffused. It includes all Gs, 5G included.

Your being in eye level with a tower is harmful – rule of thumb. We give a limiting distance of 150 metres – after which the radiation is not so hard. If you are at the top of a hill, and the cell phone towers, are at a different plane and the towers are not in your line of sight – you are mostly not at risk.

If you show us photos, we will be able to answer better. Hope we have been able to answer your question to some degree of satisfaction.

Thanks & Regards

If the tower is on the top of the building where we are staying, then it is very dangerous for the residence of that building.

Reply to  JK

sorry for a late reply.
There is less risk of high cell tower radiation exposure if you are staying in a building with celltowers on top of the building. In all probability you will be in a shadow area – i.e low coverage area.
In a low coverage area, device (cellphone) radiation starts peaking. A cellphone is like a mini tower you are carrying on yourself. Therefore it is far more dangerous if the cellphone starts radiating high radiation because it is absorbed by the body proportionately more. The remedy to this is actually simple – use a headphone. A radiation shielded headphone is even better. You will find that in Amazon.

Is living in a house 200 meters away from multiple cellular antennas unhealthy?

brightsandz
Reply to  Justin

Answering this question is a bit tricky. Usually 200 metres distance is considered to be safe. However the operative word here, is “multiple”. How many of the antennas from these towers are facing towards you? Also are you in the same plane as these antennas or you are in ground floor and these antennas are 15m-20m atop the ground.

There are many variables that have not been discussed. Therefore objectively answering your question is slightly difficult. We would advice you to do a premise radiation audit to know if it is bad.

I live in the penthouse (13 floors) in highest part of Southampton. There is a mass of antenna on the roof many of which are being up graded to G5. The roof is flat reinforced concrete.

We are both in our 80s. My wife is suffering from a serious memory loss and after a year the cause/cure has not been found. Any chance living 10 meters below these antenna could be a possible cause.

hi,
i am moving to a house that is about 370 meters from 2 mobile phone mast towers, each one has about 4-6 long antenna on and 2-3 round ones. they are pointing in all different directions, with a housing estate in between our new house and the towers. i believe there is also a tv transmitter on there as well . i am hugely worried about moving to this house and worry about my kids and my health and my husbands health, can you put my mind at rest about this please? i suffer from terrible health anxiety
thanks,

Hi alison

Thanks for the correspondence. 370 meters is a lot of distance and it should mitigate all high radiation at this distance. There could be other sources of radiation closer to you such as your mobile phone, WiFi and mobiles and WiFis in your neighbourhood. But in the current scenario that you have described, we think that you will not be under any great risk from these mobile phone tower masts.

Thanks

Hi I live 200 metres away from a tower running at 3,500kmz (5 g) I was wondering the health effects it may have to myself and young children aged 3 to 8. Previously it was running at 2400khz but has now switched to a higher frequency. Also am I in the safe zone? I live in a house and the tower has no buildings blocking it,its visible from my window.
Thanks

200 metres is long enough distance to mitigate high radiation. Therefore there should empirically be no risk to you and your family (Empirically – because we dont have scientific/ audit data)

3.5GHz decays faster than 2.4GHz. Dont worry. be more worried of the WiFi and smartphone at your home.

Hi!

I’m looking to buy a plot to build my house. I have two options, both of them are near two mobile phone towers. One plot is roughly 125 m (direct view) from one tower and 205 m from the other tower. The future house would be roughly 145 m from one tower and 210 m from the other.
The other plot is roughly 100 m (direct view) from one tower and 260 m from the other tower. The future house would be roughly 130 m and 270 m from the other.
Would any of those options could be potentially harmful to my health? Which option would be better in terms of health? Please advise.

A reliance jio tower is placed near my house. Around 15 meter distance. It is 4 G mobile. EMF 0.113723 (W/m2) and frequency band 800,1800 and 2300 mhz. I am living on second floor. And anttenas are placed 20 m high from ground. So anttenas are not placed in same plane..is there any concern about this.

Sorry, I don’t know this one exactly. Ideally it should be zero. After all it is ineffective and inefficient. But there will be leakages. Should be 1/8th or even lesser. That is my guess. You will need to research on this.

EMF reading of .113723 W/ sq.m ~ 113 mW/ sq.m is high enough. Yes, i think there is a good cause of concern about the situation that you have explained.

prima facie, by the way you describe the geometry – it looks to be safe. but i think it is best to audit the premise and then get the correct picture. guess work is not advisable.
